Energy production in May 2023: imported coal increased by 92.6% year-on-year

Raw coal production remains stable, and imports continue to grow at a high level. In May, 390 million tons of raw coal were produced, a year-on-year increase of 4.2%. The growth rate slowed down 0.3 percentage points from April, with an average daily output of 12.43 million tons. Imported coal was 39.58 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 92.6%, and the growth rate was 19.9 percentage points faster than in April.

From January to May, 1.91 billion tons of raw coal were produced, a year-on-year increase of 4.8%. Imported coal was 180 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 89.6%.

Crude oil production has accelerated, and imports have turned from falling to increasing. In May, 18.07 million tons of crude oil were produced, a year-on-year increase of 2.7%, and the growth rate was 1.3 percentage points faster than in April. The average daily output was 583,000 tons. Imported crude oil was 51.44 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 12.3%, and a decrease of 1.4% in April.

From January to May, 87.71 million tons of crude oil were produced, a year-on-year increase of 2.1%. Imported crude oil was 230.21 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 6.2%.

Crude oil processing maintained rapid growth, but the growth rate has slowed down. In May, 62 million tons of crude oil were processed, a year-on-year increase of 15.4%, and the growth rate was 3.5 percentage points lower than in April. The average daily crude oil processed was 2 million tons. From January to May, 302.63 million tons of crude oil were processed, a year-on-year increase of 9.8%.

Natural gas production is steady growth, import growth accelerated. In May, 19 billion cubic meters of natural gas were produced, a year-on-year increase of 7.2%, and the growth rate was 0.2 percentage points faster than in April. The average daily output was 610 million cubic meters. Imported natural gas was 10.64 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 17.3%, and the growth rate was 5.9 percentage points faster than in April.

From January to May, 97.3 billion cubic meters of natural gas were produced, a year-on-year increase of 5.3%. Imported natural gas was 46.29 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 3.3%.

2. Electricity production

The growth rate of electricity production has slowed down slightly. In May, power generation was 688.6 billion kilowatt-hours, a year-on-year increase of 5.6%. The growth rate was 0.5 percentage points lower than in April, and the average daily power generation was 22.21 billion kilowatt-hours. From January to May, power generation reached 3,421.6 billion kilowatt-hours, a year-on-year increase of 3.9%.

In terms of types, in May, the growth rate of thermal power and nuclear power accelerated, the decline of hydropower expanded, the growth rate of wind power fell back, and the growth rate of solar power increased from a decrease. Among them, thermal power increased by 15.9% year-on-year, and the growth rate was 4.4 percentage points faster than in April; nuclear power increased by 6.3%, and the growth rate was 0.6 percentage points faster than April; hydropower decreased by 32.9%, and the decline rate was 7.0 percentage points larger than April; wind power increased by 15.3% %, with the growth rate falling 5.6 percentage points from April; solar power generation increased by 0.1%, compared with a decrease of 3.3% in April.

Average daily product output: It is calculated by dividing the total output of industrial enterprises above designated size announced in the month by the number of calendar days in the month.

2. Statistical scope

The statistical caliber of the output data in the report is for industries above designated size, and its statistical scope is the annual main business income of 20 million Industrial enterprises worth RMB 10,000 and above.

Since the scope of industrial enterprises above designated size changes every year, in order to ensure that the data of this year are comparable with the previous year, the same period number used to calculate the year-on-year growth rate of various indicators such as product output is the same as that of the current period. The scope of enterprise statistics is consistent, but there is a difference in caliber from the data released last year.
