Emotion and rationality are a pair of antonyms and are often discussed as opposites. So, when these two words are put in the same context, what kind of collision and fusion will happen?

In 2020, Hengjie & NetEase Home will join hands to launch the "Quality and Beauty in China" design open class. On May 26th, the sixth phase of the open class online tour, we were honored to invite Chen Dejian, the founder of Dejian Design KCA, to the live broadcast room to share "Sensibility vs. Rationality" with designer friends and listen to his design confessions.

In Chen Dejian’s view, sensibility is the expression of one’s own emotions, a pursuit of Self ego, in which Self satisfaction is obtained, and at the same time, different judgments are produced based on different personal values; the so-called rationality is more Scientific logic is often needed. Regarding the perceptual level, in daily life, he likes to record life by taking photos. He believes that this is the process of facing one's own emotions. In this city, whether walking on a certain street or seeing strange people, Old people, old buildings and even dirty scenes will produce certain subtle emotions, and at the same time, this emotion will continue to accumulate under the influence of culture and environment.

"A few years ago, I released a music album. I wrote all the lyrics and music myself. The pictures in the lyrics album are also photos I took while traveling. It is completely personal and self-contained. Insight, I think every designer should remain sensitive to life. ”

Design comes from life, and commercial space is higher than life. Therefore, when designing, we will consider history, culture, local customs and customsStarting from different levels, history is not only knowledge in books, but also an emotional memory. How to use this emotional memory in design requires designers to have a pair of observant eyes.

For example, symbols representing China such as ceramics and blue bricks can also become elements of space design. Designers need to defamiliarize this common material that they are accustomed to. This kind of creation is not constructed by rational thinking, but by logic. The imagination outside is unconstrained.

At the same time, the design itself is not cold, but requires more emotional projection. Chen Dejian has done many interesting designs, such as the rice lamps sloping down in the sushi shop; he deliberately uses formalism to express the balance between tradition and modernity. It is called "balance" between the bathrooms full of street culture; the small and dilapidated mine-themed restaurant; and the artwork of marks made on the wall by bicycle rollers...

"Why do we use bicycles to make so many marks on the wall? It's actually quite tiring because we deliberately grind them one by one. But the fun part is that we will pass through many places in our lives and we will always leave some traces behind. You will meet different people and see different scenery. Some people will disappear slowly, and some people will keep going. Life is a journey, and we must enjoy this process and every day of our lives. ”

So thinking from a rational level is not just about thinking about problems from emotions, life and experience, but from the most objective perspective. No matter what space is designed, the most important thing is to have a goal before starting to achieve the goal. , we must have a clear understanding of what our customers are thinking. Designers must understand that design is not to realize their own ideals, but to help others realize their dreams.

Especially for real estate projects, we must think about whether an interesting idea is more important, or whether it is more important to balance practicality and aesthetics. No matter what type of space it is, it must be based on spatial logic and business logic itself. If it is divorced from reality,If we start, then sensibility will not be able to develop and rationality will cease to exist.

Emotion and rationality are opposites, but they do not necessarily stand on opposite sides. When designers think about problems, they must be more comprehensive and understand how to balance reason and emotion.

Q: Mr. Chen always insists on creativity and originality. In fact, in recent years, new domestic brands have also continued to innovate and continuously enhance the influence of Chinese brands in the world. What do you think of the innovation of domestic brands in the home building materials category? How does it promote design development?

[Chen Dejian]: Nowadays, more and more brands have original genes, especially their quality, materials, cultural heritage, and the most important thing is how to integrate our culture into them. Just like Hengjie Sanitary Ware, it will also use this concept to make products. The emergence and practice of this kind of thinking also need to be promoted by the entire industry. I hope Hengjie can do better and better and present the best results for our designs.

Q: Can Mr. Chen share how to cooperate across borders in the project and how to cooperate?

【Chen Dejian】:What does cross-border cooperation mean? Cross-border cooperation means getting together with people from different industries. Because if you only do a certain type of thing, you will develop a kind of inertial thinking. If you want to make a breakthrough, you must make cross-border attempts and dialogue and exchanges with people from different industries. Different ideas and concepts will merge into emerging ideas and affairs through constant collision. Designers are an industry that needs constant stimulation of inspiration, so we must have more cross-border dialogues.

Q: Teacher Chen, can you share your design method?

【Chen Dejian】:I think being a designer is a profession that relies on experience. Where have you been, who have you met, and how are your friends around you, including knowledge reserves, professional knowledge, etc. They are all important factors that affect the level of design. Designers need to improve their own level, not only in terms of techniques, but also in life.Go into life.

Q: How can we get the owners to accept the designers’ novel ideas?

[Chen Dejian]:In fact, it is not easy to convince the owners. Many times designers hope to fulfill their inner ideals through customer projects, which does not mean that this is a kind of Wrong, but we must also understand that design is a silent service. Designers must sacrifice part of their inner self to help customers achieve their inner goals. As long as they think from the customer's perspective, then they can Earn your customers' trust.
